ASL (American Sign Language)

American Sign Language (ASL) Interpretation is a specialized service dedicated to bridging the communication gap between Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing individuals and the hearing community. This service is not just an accommodation—it is a legal requirement under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to ensure effective, accurate, and impartial communication in all public and professional settings.

We provide access to certified, qualified ASL interpreters who possess the linguistic expertise, cultural competence, and ethical rigor required for professional work.

The Value of a Certified ASL Interpreter

Certification and Qualifications:

Our interpreters often hold certifications such as the National Interpreter Certification (NIC) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or other state-level credentials. These certifications demonstrate that the interpreter has met rigorous standards in language proficiency, interpretation skills, and adherence to the RID Code of Professional Conduct.

Cultural Competence:

A qualified interpreter understands Deaf culture, ensuring that the intent, tone, and context of the message are conveyed appropriately, which is crucial for building trust and rapport.

Legal Compliance

Utilizing a qualified interpreter is the clearest way for organizations to meet their obligations under the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, protecting them from claims of discrimination or non-compliance.

ASL is not merely a communication tool; it is the primary source of cultural transmission and cohesion for the Deaf community. It fosters a shared identity, history, and set of values. The ability to communicate without barriers in one's native language is fundamental to mental health and educational success.

  • Settings: Emergency rooms, doctor's offices, surgical consultations, rehabilitation, mental health services, and physical therapy sessions.
  • Confidentiality: Interpreters adhere strictly to HIPAA and other patient privacy regulations.

  • Impartiality: The interpreter must remain strictly impartial, accurately conveying all legal concepts without bias, ensuring the Deaf individual has full and equal access to the justice system.
  • Settings: Courtrooms, depositions, police interrogations, arbitrations, and public defender/prosecutor consultations.

Business and Employment Settings

  • Academic Register: Interpreters must adapt their communication to various academic settings, from elementary school classrooms to university-level lectures and specialized lab work.
  • Role Clarity: The interpreter's role is specifically to facilitate communication of instruction, not to tutor or provide academic assistance (often governed by the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) standards).
  • Settings: K-12 classrooms, IEP meetings, parent-teacher conferences, college lectures, university student services, and extracurricular activities.

On-Site (In-Person) The interpreter travels to your location. Ideal for long appointments, complex legal proceedings, or situations where high-stakes personal interaction is essential.

Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) The interpreter connects via a secure, high-quality video link. This is the most common and effective remote method for ASL.
